Bronx Zoo tiger tests positive, COVID-19 FAQs and updates, Johns Hopkins research, Number of cases in the United States

Fact: Coronavirus is zoonotic. This means it is transmitted between animals and people.

Strong evidence shows that the virus likely came from bats as bats are considered natural hosts of these viruses. However, other animals might be involved as well.

Bronx Zoo Tiger Tests Positive

A 4-year old tiger at the Bronx Zoo was tested positive for coronavirus the weekend of April 4th, 2020. Nadia, the tiger, received the test from Dr. Paul Calle. Nadia was infected by the virus through a zoo keeper who was asymptomatically infected with the virus” while caring for the tigers.

“In Wuhan, China, almost 15% of cats tested had antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 virus, suggesting they either were infected by people or other cats”. –Forbes

Are my pets okay? Am I okay?

People are at MUCH MUCH greater risk than their pets. As of today, April 6th, there are 1,288,319 total human coronavirus cases worldwide. 945,743 of those cases are actively infected individuals. The country with the highest number of total cases is the United States. The number of identified cases in the US has reached 336,906, resulting in 9,624 deaths to date. These numbers will increase.

For now, rest assured that you are a much greater risk to your friends, family, and the United States than your pets are. So if you want to eventually get to a place or normalcy, keep washing your hands for 20 seconds, stay home, and don’t be an idiot. Simple as that.
