10 Things Successful People do Before 9AM

If you want to be mediocre and rise with the sun, then go ahead and snooze your alarm and stop reading this post.

If you want to be mediocre and rise with the sun, then go ahead and snooze your alarm and stop reading this post.

But, if you want to make more cash money in the long-term, keep reading about what successful people, like CEO of Pepsi, Indra Nooyi, do before sunrise. Nooyi and Sallie Krawcheck make sure they’re up and ready to go by 4AM.

According to a study by biologist Christoph Randler,

“People whose performance peaks in the morning are better positioned for career success because they’re more proactive than people who are at their best in the evening.”

You are on the path to better habits by establishing a morning routine. Also, before you say “I’m not a morning person”, let me tell you that you are lying to yourself. I’m not a bodybuilder, but if I worked at it, I could be. Nothing worthwhile ever came from speaking in absolutes. Jeff Bezos wasn’t once the richest person in the world, either.

1. Disconnect

  • Make a conscious effort to not roll over in bed, turn off your alarm, and immediately click the Instagram app. Do you think it’s healthy to start off a fresh morning with fake news? No. Self-control!! Check that social media later if you must, but first, set intentions.

2. Write down 3 intentions and 3 things you’re grateful for

  • There’s heaps of positive psychology research out there around starting and ending your day with jotting down gratitude. This mindfulness habit only takes 1-3minutes max, but can set the stage for how your day will go. The image below is the journal I use to have more consistency in my day and track measurable results

If you love quotes, this 5-minute journal is for you

3. Open your window curtain

  • Even if it’s not light outside yet, just do it. One more thing to cross off your productivity list!

 4. Drink lemon water

  • Drink a 8oz+ glass of water before you’ve had anything else to eat or drink. A warm cup of lemon water has shown to have weight loss benefits and numerous other benefits such as reduced joint and muscle pain. Click here for more information on how lemon water helps to jumpstart your day.

5. Listen to a podcast (or 2)

  • Oh babyyyy, bullet point number 5 is my fav! I listen to a variety of different podcasts ranging from Productivity to Sales 101 to Murder Mysteries. If you’re learning something each morning, you’re doing something right. It’s so much easier to get ready before 8AM with a podcast playing out loud while I bronze my face and curl my hair. Click here for a list of a few go-to podcasts.

  • There’s no better way to start a day than with some type of physical activity. Take a gander to Central Park in the fall or drive over to your gym for an early bird cardio + lift sesh. If you’re a busy gal/guy, getting your workout done in the morning will give you more time to meet up with friends after work for a martini or for attending events like EDITIONS where you can catch up on the latest fashion trends and investments. You’ll feel so accomplished when its 7pm and you’ve already burned 1,000 active calories!
  • Keep going to the end of this article to hear about a CEO of a beauty company who wakes up at 6AM and goes on a walk

7. Check your calendar

  • Checking your calendar is part 2 of setting your intentions for the day. I color code my calendar based on three topics:
    • Intro calls / Product demonstrations (yellow)
    • Internal meetings / Webinars (blue)
    • Personal / Afterwork activities (lavender)
  • This helps me visualize what % of each group I have each day and where I could add in more “topics”. I’m in sales, so it’s crucial to stay organized if you want to see results.

8. Make a to-do list

  • This is another great way to stay organized and feel accomplished at the end of the day. I get such a gratifying feeling when I check off a little square box in my bullet journal. Every day, I mark off on a chart if I’ve worked out and I make a list of my to-do’s.
    • Example of my Monday (11/5) to-do list:Sales meeting 9-11am
      • Check personal and healthify emails 11:15-12:15
      • Lunch, pickup contacts, submit rebate 12:15-1:15
      • Check AC investment account
      • Call Billy at 3pm
      • Leave work, make dinner at home
      • Gym by 7pm
      • Clean sheets and put away laundry at 8:15
  • Woop there it is! Setting intentions part 3.

9. Make your bed

  • Making my bed gives me a clean feeling. The crisp grey sheets are pulled snug against my mattress and my white fluffy duvet is the perfect amount of messy. Fun fact: Making your bed can lead to greater productivity. Check out “The power of habit” for more information.

10. Play cardi B on your way to the train

  • (Duh)
“A CEO who sold her beauty company for $210 million wakes up every day at 6 a.m. without an alarm, walks 4 miles, and spends up to 3 hours working from an office in her bathroom”
